Through Discovery to Recovery
We combine neuroscience, digital technologies and clinical expertise to improve mental health diagnosis, prevention, and care

About us

The Institute for Mental Health and Translational Neurosciences (The MHTN Institute) is dedicated to advancing a comprehensive scientific understanding of mental health through interdisciplinary research, translational neuroscience, and the development of innovative personalised approaches in research, education, and healthcare. Our work focuses on the prediction, prevention, accurate identification, and treatment of mental health issues and improving people’s wellbeing and quality of life.

We conduct research at the intersection of mental health and neuroscience. We are also committed to advancing personalised healthcare and education by developing tools and resources that support healthcare professionals.

Our research

The research of the MHTN Institute focuses on understanding of mental health through interdisciplinary approaches combining basic and clinical research, psychology, psychometrics, neuroscience as well as artificial intelligence. The Institute advances this mission through a focus on Personalised Mental Health and Translational Neuroscience.

Personalised Mental Health is an emerging paradigm grounded in the understanding that individuals’ mental health conditions arise from complex and unique interactions of multiple individual biological, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors that vary across individuals. Research and healthcare in this field seek to tailor the prediction, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health issues to the individual by accounting for this unique combination of influences. By integrating these diverse dimensions, personalised mental health approaches enable more precise risk assessment, early prediction, and timely intervention, while also offering a deeper understanding of how each person’s mental health experience evolves over time. Through the study ofindividual risk profiles, disease trajectories, and treatment responses, this approach supports the development of more compassionate and effective interventions, ultimately improving health outcomes and reducing the personal and societal burden of mental health conditions.

Translational Neuroscience focuses on bridging fundamental interdisciplinary research in neuroscience with practical applications in mental health and related areas. It translates discoveries from diverse disciplines, such as psychology, medicine, biology, anthropology, neuroscience, computer science, and data science into real-world tools and strategies. The goal is to better understand how the brain works, and to improve people’s health and wellbeing by enabling timely prediction, early identification, effective prevention, and better treatment of mental health issues. Through this work, translational neuroscience supports the development of innovative healthcare tools and methods, and advances more personalised interventions, contributing to better mental health care and improved quality of life.

Research areas:

  • Identification of psychological, clinical, social, and other markers in promotion of better mental health.
  • Prediction, early detection, prevention, and improvement of mental health outcomes.
  • Population-wide research and systematic reviews.
  • Dissemination findings of mental health research at a national and international level.
  • Promotion personalised mental health approaches.
  • Development and evaluation of digital tools in mental health and education.
